About Wetlands of Distinction

The Wetlands of Distinction initiative was created to help the Society of Wetland Scientists (SWS) advance its goal of supporting wetland education and public awareness. The Wetlands of Distinction subcommittee under the auspices of the Society of Wetland Scientists’ Education and Outreach Committee governs Wetlands of Distinction. This initiative aids SWS in realizing its vision to “form the basis of the public’s understanding of the important functions and values of wetlands.”

As part of the Wetlands of Distinction initiative, SWS has created this online showcase of top-tier wetlands. The online showcase will be used to promote awareness, appreciation, and knowledge of some of the country’s most ecologically sensitive landscapes. The Wetlands of Distinction program features and highlights wetlands that exhibit exemplary function and service.

When an application is submitted to Wetlands of Distinction program, a wetland expert from the corresponding SWS chapter region will evaluate it. The process for Wetlands of Distinction application is as follows:

  • Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis.
  • For the first phase rollout, SWS has worked closely with state agencies and organizations to obtain applications for wetlands considered critical, special, or rare on government or non-government lists which will serve as a base for the new program.
  • Application review process is conducted by a group of local wetland experts and is overseen by a Chapter Board Member/Officer.  The Wetlands of Distinction Subcommittee provides a final review.
  • We are currently in the first-phase of the application process and are reviewing applications for previously cataloged important wetland areas. We will announce the first batch of Wetlands of Distinction in June 2017 — stay tuned!”
